Learn how integrating a high-security fencewith anti-climb mesh protects airport perimeters from unauthorized breaches, featuring data from a recent runway expansion project.
Overview
During the expansion of an internationalairport near Warsaw, Poland, the operator needed to extend the securityperimeter by more than 5 kilometers to protect the newly constructed runway andaircraft taxiway.
To comply with international aviationsecurity standards while maintaining clear visibility for surveillance patrols, the project required a fencing solution that offered superior anti-climbperformance, long-term corrosion resistance and minimal maintenance.
Threat Profile & FacilityRequirements
The facility’s northern expansion pushed the runway perimeter right up against apublic thoroughfare, drastically raising the risk of unauthorized entry.
·Compliance: The system needed to strictly match global aviationsafety and security standards.
·Vulnerability: Standard chain-link choices were ruled out becausethey are easily cut and scaled.
·Visibility: Security patrols demanded a clear line-of-sight to spotthreats before they reached the line.
Installation Specifications
Contractors installed a heavy-duty fencesystem using premium 358 mesh panels (76.2 mm× 12.7 mm spacing). The tight aperture grid denies finger or toeholds, making it virtually impossible to climb without specialized equipment.
·Height: 3.0 meters of high-tensile mesh paneling.
·Topping: 600mm Y-post extensions supporting galvanized barbed tape.
·Foundation: Continuous below-grade concrete curbing to stoptunneling attempts.
Recorded Outcomes
1.Installation Area: 5.2 kilometers ofperimeter coverage.
2.Delay Matrix: Increased intrusion delaytime from 15 seconds to over 8 minutes against standard manual cutting tools.
3.Lifespan: The combination of hot-dipgalvanization and UV-stable PVC coating extends the service life to 20+ years, even in coastal environments.
